Apple season is in full swing, and this guy is pretty happy about that. An apple a day keeps the doctor away – I guess he’s happy about that too. Just don’t tell him that he would fit nicely in a good old fashion apple pie.

If figured that since it was fun carving out that last batch of pumpkins faces, I should try other fruits and vegetables. I was thinking what the expression would be on a ripe habanero pepper would come out.

Well, tis the season to say that it is almost the time to say tis the season. I carve these pumpkins all with just smiles on their faces. I dropped one of the pumpkins and his face changed to a fearful cry. Then I saw that all the pumpkins faces changed. One hollered ‘Look Out!’ Another pumpkin just frowned at me, while the others though it was just plain funny. As the comedian said, “It’s funny till someone gets hurt, then it become hilarious!” Now their faces are stuck. Oh well.

This year at the Minnesota State fair I was awarded the American Swedish Institute Award for my flat plane carving of Santa Lucia. This was a fun carving to carve, however, the candles break off easily. I may have to pull them off and shorten them a bit. Wonder what I have for them next year.

Here is another example of my work feathering a Civil War Bust. This is a Confederate general, no particular name or likeness to any famous soldier. I use many old time photographs of a Confederate general and created my own wood carving bust. That is the fun about creating; it doesn’t have to be about someone if you use photographs to get where you want to go.

Yea, well, here it is – State Fair time. Time for corn dogs and just about anything else on a stick. What is the latest food item? I’m not sure. And Able Frake isn’t sure to since he spends all his time in the hog pavilion with Blue Boy. But I guess it was worth it for ol’ Able standing here with Blue Boy and his Grand Champion Ribbon. This carving may be made of wood, but for Able, the pig is all pork.

I am continuing with my line of Civil War carvings to honor the 150^th year of the war. This is a union cavalryman ready to do battle. This carving would also make a good western cavalryman bust also. This was fun to carve. More to come.

This was another fun project. I thought it would be interesting to create a bust of Generals US Grant and Robert E. Lee. Each were carved from two pieces of wood and fasten together by drilling a large hold between the shoulder and a ¼” hole in the base of the neck and in the center of the base hole and glue a dowel in. Then I put some glue in the base hole to finalize the attachment. I turned the head slightly to one side for extra realism.
